Join us for the inaugural Financially Savvy Seniors Summit!

This one day summit will bring more than 100 seniors together for a day of learning and awareness building on financial elder abuse.

What to expect:

  • A space of support – many seniors have been impacted by fraud, identity theft, and outright theft
  • Sharing Experiences – stories to scams and how they worked through them
  • Advocacy and awareness groups sharing vital information about programs and services for the protection and support of seniors
  • Informative and interactive sessions
  • Sessions for Seniors led by Seniors
  • Light breakfast and delicious hot lunch

Now Hiring – Summer Jobs for Students!

Thanks to the generous support from the Canada Summer Jobs Program, we are currently seeking talented young people to join our team for Summer 2018. Eligible applicants students enrolled in full-time studies at the secondary or post-secondary level. To apply simply call to book an interview by May 31st. Program Coordinator

The Program Coordinator will:

  • Plan and deliver programs to seniors, young girls and newcomer families
  • Assist with booking guest speakers and program activities
  • Support program evaluation efforts
  • Deliver safe and supportive community programs to vulnerable community members in the areas of elder abuse awareness, career exploration for young girls and back to school planning for newcomer families
  • Conduct community outreach and engagement of partners
  • Report on daily program activities

Schedule: 30 hours per week

Rate: $16 per hour

Office Administrator

The Office Administrator will:

  • welcome visitors
  • Take and direct calls
  • Prepare agendas and take meetings minutes
  • Assist with scheduling
  • Handle petty cash distribution and monthly reconciliation
  • Prepare reports as required
  • Support community events as needed
  • Prepare and maintain files as needed
  • Maintain program participant registration

Schedule: 30 hours per week

Web & Social Media Coordinator

The Web & Social media Coordinator will:

  • Develop innovative and creative media content across social media platforms
  • Collaborate with graphic designer and webmaster to ensure a cohesive social media identity
  • Propose creative strategies to boost online presence
  • Create and maintain relevant social media accounts
  • Setup daily tasks and activity for all social media outlets
  • Keep track of social media trends and competition
  • Update web content with program schedules and updated program information

Schedule: 30 hours per week

Sesheme receives $25,000 for new seniors program

On March 5th, Sesheme received a lovely visit from MP Yasmin Ratansi who share with us great news. We are thrilled to announce the introduction of Financially Savvy Seniors – an elder abuse awareness and financial literacy project. The project has been generously supported by the Government of Canada under the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) with a $25,000 grant. Beginning in April 2018, Financially Savvy Seniors will deliver information sessions on elder abuse and financial abuse awareness to vulnerable seniors across Toronto on a monthly basis. The ongoing engagement will culminate and 1-day forum bringing together all participant for a learning exchange and celebration.

Career Crush Camp

This 2-week hands-on career exploration camp for girls aged 11-15 will expose and connect participants to a wide variety of career options and mentors.

Career Crush Camp will support and inspire black girls and other girls of colour to visualize their bright futures and potential through discovery, development of potential. Participants will experience entrepreneurship, creative arts, civic engagement, service learning, science and all the possibilities that they can achieve.

Sesheme invites dynamic, inquisitive, young Black women to participate in this unique and customized program, which offers workshops, tours, and team building activities lead by an exquisite team of talented and influential professional women from a variety of sectors and non-traditional career paths. Through this experience participants will also receive socio-emotional support and guidance needed for positive development.

Fee: $75 per participant (limited subsidies are available, call to enquire)

It takes a village

She believed that everyone deserved an opportunity to live a happy and safe life and that it was everyone’s responsibility to support one another if possible.

Our parents came to Canada in the late 1970’s from Accra, Ghana.  They had three children and our mother, the late Victoria Sesheme Okine, owned a local African restaurant where she loved sharing her favourite dishes from back home.  She was also a prominent member and supporter of our community. She believed in acting upon the well-known African proverb “It takes a village” and I founded the Sesheme Foundation in her honour – to continue to empower and support people – to help them connect, participate and contribute to our larger communities.

She believed that everyone deserved an opportunity to live a happy and safe life and that it was everyone’s responsibility to support one another if possible.  It was very common to have people share a meal or stay in our home until they found work and/or found a place of their own – she was a constant source of strength and support. When she passed away so unexpectedly in 2001, we were overwhelmed by the number of people who came to the aid of our family.  Many I had never met or heard of.  They helped us through a terrible time and shared many stories of how my mom had made a difference in their lives.  I can’t begin to share how much their support meant.  We live in a rich and diverse city, yet we still experience barriers like poverty, hunger and isolation.  Life is so busy that it is easy to turn a blind eye to what’s happening around us.  But if we take just a few minutes to connect with our neighbours we strengthen our communities.  And if we can help, in even some small way when we see other families in need, we can make a lasting impact.  In listening to the stories others shared about my mother, I was inspired how so many small acts of kindness (to her) made such a lasting impact in others’ lives.

Her shared values continue to inspire the team at Sesheme, who I see everyday treating strangers like family to build community.  We focus on family relationships, child and parental care, a self-sacrificing concern for others, sharing and hospitality.  We support and engage families and individuals in opportunities to grow, to be healthy, to be of service to others in need and ensure the well-being of the whole community.  We would love for you to be a part of our growing family.
